4 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.
Beginning July 1, 2025, you can work as a dental assistant without a registration certificate if you complete a supervised practical training term under a dentist. The board sets the details by rule. The law also defines “dental assistant” to include both registered and non-registered assistants for these scope rules.
Beginning July 1, 2025, no one may perform dental work covered by Iowa’s dental laws without a current license, registration, permit, or qualification. Dentists and dental employers cannot hire anyone to do covered work without those credentials. This applies to dental workers and practice owners.
Beginning July 1, 2025, registered dental assistants who finish board-required training can be certified for expanded functions and take part in dental X-rays. Those who complete approved training may place dental sealants. All assistant services are done under a licensed dentist’s supervision, and the dentist is responsible for delegated acts. The board cannot let assistants give local anesthesia or remove plaque, stain, or calculus, except by toothbrush, floss, or rubber-cup polish. Dentists may delegate only tasks the board allows.
Beginning July 1, 2025, if you are a registered dental assistant in Iowa, you may use “Registered Dental Assistant” or “R.D.A.” after your name.
