Beginning July 1, 2025, each school must have at least one trained employee to give FDA‑approved seizure medicine and use a VNS magnet. Non‑nurse staff are not required to give rectal or vaginal suppositories. By December 31, 2026, all school staff get seizure‑recognition and first‑aid training; staff who supervise students repeat it every two years. Before giving a student seizure medicine, the school must get a signed parent authorization each school year. If a parent asks, the school works with the parent and health pros to create an individual health plan and, if needed, a seizure action plan; the school keeps the plans on file and shares them with staff who supervise the student. These planning and permission rules apply only if the school has a student with a known seizure disorder or a student taking FDA‑approved seizure medicine. State agencies align training with Epilepsy Foundation guidelines, and districts may require extra training. School staff and schools are protected from lawsuits when they act reasonably, in good faith, and follow the student’s plans.
Beginning July 1, 2025, the Department of Education convenes a work group to improve health‑care training for school staff. The group includes state agencies and representatives of teachers, boards, admins, nonpublic schools, AEAs, physicians, athletic trainers, EMS, health groups, and school nurses. The Department gives the group a list of all required health trainings and their purposes. The group plans online delivery and a five‑year training cycle, sets a standard way to add new requirements, reviews for efficiency, and recommends rule changes; it also takes public comments from parents and patient advocates. If cutting or changing a required training, the Department must invite affected groups to comment before final recommendations. The Department must send the group’s report and any proposed legislation by December 1, 2025. Members or their organizations pay their own expenses.
