Back pay for providers during credentialing

Beginning July 1, 2025, insurers must pay clean claims for covered services given during credentialing once the provider is approved. This applies to physicians, advanced registered nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. Claims must meet Iowa’s “clean claim” definition. The insurance commissioner adopts rules to run this process.

Insurers must answer credentialing in 56 days

Beginning July 1, 2025, insurers must answer a provider’s credentialing request within 56 calendar days. If they deny it, they must give a written reason. The rules apply to physicians, advanced registered nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. The law also defines “credentialing” and “credentialing period” so these timelines are clear.
