Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Paid parental leave for state workers

Beginning 07/01/2025, Iowa state employees who qualify for FMLA get paid parental leave. The parent who gave birth gets up to 4 weeks; the non-birthing parent gets up to 1 week. For an adoption, a parent gets up to 4 weeks. You must take the leave within 12 months of the birth or placement. The Department of Administrative Services sets rules.

State workers get extra vacation

Beginning 07/01/2025, eligible state workers may add up to a half day of vacation in months they use no sick leave. In the first four years, you must have at least 10 sick days saved; after year four, you must have 30. Part-time workers get a prorated amount, and this option replaces your sick leave accrual for that month. It excludes Board of Regents nine-month faculty and some public safety bargaining-unit employees. The Department of Administrative Services and the Board of Regents set rules.
