New pay and job rules at blind/deaf schools

The Department of Administrative Services, with the Department of Education, now sets annual pay schedules and benefits for all staff at the Iowa program for the blind and visually impaired and the Iowa School for the Deaf. State teacher employment rules on contracts, evaluations, and discipline now apply to these staff. The discipline rule also applies to unlicensed staff who care for or supervise children. When those rules mention a school board, they apply to the Department of Education for these employees.

Some community college faculty treated as teachers

If you teach credit-bearing classes that make up more than half your workload, you are treated as a teacher under state employment rules. Adjuncts, continuing education, and noncredit instructors are not included. This can extend job protections and procedures to those full-load credit faculty.

Support for teachers seeking National Board

The Department of Education runs a pilot for teachers who register for or earn National Board certification. You qualify only if you are employed by an Iowa school district, paid as a classroom teacher. The state provides $508,250 in FY 2024–2025 for certification awards. At least $85,000 supports the Ambassador to Education position. Any unspent money stays available to pay stipends to people who earn an advanced dyslexia specialist endorsement.
