Faster Iowa certification for veterans and ex-federal officers

Starting July 1, 2025, qualifying veterans and former federal officers can skip Iowa’s Level I academy through reciprocity. Veterans must have at least 4 years of active duty, served as military police within 3 years of applying, completed accredited MP training that meets academy standards, and have an honorable discharge or still be serving. Former federal officers must have at least 4 years of federal service within 3 years of applying and accredited federal training that meets academy standards. You must apply to the academy council and include proof of service, discharge (for veterans), training, and duty records. The council reviews and approves qualified applicants, may offer Level II entry if not approved, and must set clear rules for judging training equivalency.

Agency-sponsored police training with new degree rule

Starting July 1, 2025, you can attend a Level II short police course only if a law enforcement agency sponsors you. The agency must have hired you or intend to hire you as an officer. To use this path, you must show you finished a 2‑ or 4‑year police science or criminal justice program at an accredited Iowa school the academy approves. You must also meet the qualifications listed in the new reciprocity section of Iowa law.
