Starting May 27, 2025, these centers can use many funding streams. They are eligible for funds used by licensed hospice programs and residential care facilities. Named sources include the Social Services Block Grant, State Supplementary Assistance, the hospice respite benefit, and home‑ and community‑based waivers. They can also use any Medicaid funding under chapter 249A and nursing‑facility respite benefits. This can lower family out‑of‑pocket costs when a child qualifies.
Starting May 27, 2025, the law creates a special class of residential facilities for very ill children. These centers offer respite care and hospice program services only. A child qualifies if under 21 and has a chronic, complex, life‑threatening illness that shortens life. The child is not expected to live past age 21. Centers in this class are exempt from section 10A.713 requirements.
