Beginning 07/01/2026, Iowa follows federal rules for what counts as qualified 529 education expenses. You can use 529 money for K–12 tuition, within federal limits. You can use it for costs of an apprenticeship that is registered with the U.S. Department of Labor. You can also pay some student loan principal or interest for the beneficiary or a sibling, up to federal caps.
