Iowa updates education savings rules for families
Beginning July 1, 2026, Iowa updates which expenses qualify under its education savings program and related tax rules. The law uses the federal definition without the former reference tying it to the 2017 federal tax law. Qualifying elementary and secondary school tuition remains covered, subject to federal caps. Covered apprenticeship costs must be for programs registered and certified with the U.S. Secretary of Labor. Qualified loan principal and interest payments for a beneficiary or their sibling remain covered, subject to federal loan-payment limits.
