Faster DOT permits for power lines

Beginning July 1, 2026, when a utility asks in writing, the DOT assigns a project coordinator within 30 days and reviews the corridor. The DOT shares known highway plans that could affect line placement in that corridor. If a DOT permit is required, the DOT decides within 30 days of filing. If the DOT denies an installation on a primary or interstate right‑of‑way, it makes the reason public within 90 days. For federal‑aid work on nonprimary highways, local officials and the DOT follow all federal utility‑accommodation rules.

Utilities can run lines along highways

Beginning July 1, 2026, the DOT writes utility‑accommodation rules for work on primary road rights‑of‑way. After the rules take effect, utilities must give notice and may need permission before installing lines. Utilities can request to run transmission lines along primary roads, including interstates, unless the DOT finds a safety or highway‑use risk. The rules allow immediate work in emergencies and for quick service extensions, under DOT and Utilities Board standards. The rules cannot be looser than Utilities Board standards and do not give the DOT power to pick routes.
