Protections change for contingent annuities

Beginning July 1, 2026, Iowa’s standard nonforfeiture rules for deferred annuities do not automatically apply to contingent deferred annuities. The Insurance Commissioner may set separate nonforfeiture benefits by rule that are fair to policyholders and fit the risks. That means your protections under a contingent deferred annuity can differ from the usual Iowa standards and will follow any rules the Commissioner adopts. This change applies only to contingent deferred annuities issued in Iowa.
