Public project contractors get new acceptance notices
Beginning July 1, 2026, Iowa public corporations must send written notice within 14 calendar days after finally accepting a public improvement. The notice must give the final acceptance date. It goes to the main contractor, performance-bond sureties, and labor or material claimants who have filed claims. However, the public corporation is not liable for claims or damages caused by failing to give notice. Court actions to settle rights to project funds or enforce bond liability have a 30-to-60-day window after completion and final acceptance. The public corporation, main contractor, bond surety, or a labor or material claimant who filed a claim can bring these actions. Actions must be filed in the county where the improvement is located.
