Beginning July 1, 2025, the Iowa DOT can let you keep the same license plates when you renew. It can use a yearly validation sticker to show you paid the registration fee. The DOT issues one sticker for each set of plates. Each sticker shows the month and year your plates expire.
Beginning July 1, 2025, put the validation sticker only on the rear plate. If your vehicle is a truck tractor, put the sticker on the front plate. If you get next year’s sticker early, your current registration stays valid. You do not have to apply the new sticker until your current registration would be expired.
