3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.
Beginning July 1, 2025, your college cannot force you to take leave, withdraw, or limit classes just because you are pregnant. You can get reasonable help, like extra health and safety steps, excused medical absences, and rescheduled tests and due dates. You also get extra time to take exams and to finish your degree, if it follows school policies and you and the school agree. You can take a reasonable leave and return with the same standing you had, as much as is reasonably possible.
Beginning July 1, 2025, each school’s Title IX coordinator must keep a system to get and investigate complaints about these protections. Schools must keep a written pregnancy discrimination policy, train staff, give it to students at orientation, and post protections on their website. Campus health centers must share information on these protections when asked or when appropriate. Schools must also name a separate office (not Title IX) to support pregnant and parenting students, publish its contact info, oversee compliance, and share info on child care, breastfeeding spaces, and parenting help.
Beginning July 1, 2025, these rules apply at Iowa public universities governed by the Board of Regents and at community colleges. For this law, a covered “student” means a biological female. The term “institution” includes the school’s faculty and staff. These rules do not apply to a student’s job with the school.
