Beginning July 1, 2025, certified emergency medical care providers may stabilize a severely injured police service dog that was on duty under a peace officer’s supervision. Care is only to immediately stabilize the dog for later diagnosis or treatment by a licensed veterinarian. Providers may choose whether to help and are not civilly liable if they act reasonably and in good faith. Human patients come first. Providers can treat a dog only after finishing care for the last human on scene, must not use equipment needed for people, and must stop dog care if the provider or their vehicle is sent elsewhere. Ambulances and EMS vehicles cannot transport the dog.
