2 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.
Beginning July 1, 2025, Iowa sets mandatory prison minimums for people with a prior felony who knowingly have, receive, or transport a firearm or offensive weapon. This also applies to someone adjudicated delinquent for conduct that would be a felony if done by an adult. First offense: class D felony, up to 5 years, at least 2 years served. Second offense: class D felony, up to 5 years, at least 4 years served. Third offense: class C felony, up to 10 years, at least 7 years served. Fourth or later: class C felony, up to 10 years, at least 10 years served. Judges cannot defer judgment or sentencing or suspend these minimums, except the first‑offense minimum may be suspended only if the county attorney recommends it. Good‑time credits do not cut the mandatory minimum; they only count toward the rest of the indeterminate term.
On July 1, 2025, one firearms law section is repealed. The rules in that section no longer apply. The law does not state a replacement. This change only affects people who were covered by that former section.
