Grants and rules for school-age child care

Beginning July 1, 2026, the state approves grants only for school‑age child care programs that meet key standards. Programs must have safe, age‑appropriate spaces; provide transport when needed; offer age‑appropriate activities; run effective administration; hire staff who meet state standards; provide food; offer emergency care; and follow state cost rules. The director adopts rules on hiring, minimum staff‑to‑child ratios, indoor and outdoor space, nutrition, and emergency care. The rules also set cost and expense standards (including for programs in schools or other sites and for transport to off‑site programs), a sliding fee scale for grant programs, application steps and deadlines, and how applicants are prioritized. Programs that take grants must follow these standards.
