2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.
Beginning July 1, 2026, the excise police and related plan uses a set formula. Your allowance equals 25% of average pay plus 1 2/3% for each completed year over 10, capped at 75%. Paid monthly at normal retirement. If you retire after June 30, 2026, you may choose a joint‑and‑survivor option. That choice lowers your check. Your beneficiary can get the full reduced amount, two‑thirds, or one‑half. The board sets the actuarial reduction. For deaths not in the line of duty after January 31, 2018, a surviving parent, spouse, or eligible child gets 50% of what the participant would get with 25 years at age 50. Children split the amount; a child’s share ends at 18 or at marriage. This survivor allowance does not apply if the joint‑and‑survivor option was chosen, except as the law specifies.
The law provides one-time “13th checks” to eligible retirees and survivors in Indiana pension plans. Teachers, public employees, and excise/gaming/conservation plans: you must have retired or become disabled on or before December 1, 2025 and be entitled to a monthly benefit on July 1, 2026. Paid by October 1, 2026: $150 (5–9 years), $275 (10–19), $375 (20–29), or $450 (30+). Partial years do not count. State police plans: you must have retired or become disabled before July 2, 2025 (pre‑1987) or after June 30, 1987 and before July 2, 2025 (1987), and be entitled to a benefit on September 1, 2026. Paid by October 1, 2026: the amount equals 1% of the maximum basic annual pension for a trooper (20 years for pre‑1987; 25 years for 1987). These are one‑time payments, not increases to monthly pensions. Most provisions end January 1, 2028.
