3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.
Beginning July 1, 2026, the Department of Correction must send electronic notice at least seven days before releasing a serious violent felon. It must notify the sheriff, prosecutor, and police chief in the county and city that will receive the person, and in the place where the crime happened. Any registered victim also gets an alert through the automated victim notification system. This also applies to a juvenile being discharged for conduct that would be a serious violent felony.
Beginning July 1, 2026, if a victim attends sentencing, the court must tell them about the automated victim notification system. Victims have a right to get case progress updates when they ask. Prosecutors and victim assistance programs must give victims written notice about the automated notification system.
Beginning July 1, 2026, before hiring any law enforcement officer, the hiring agency must ask all prior law enforcement employers for full, unredacted disciplinary findings and the entire employment file, excluding medical records. Prior agencies must respond within ten business days. The applicant can ask for a copy of what was sent. Agencies that respond in good faith are immune from liability, and non-disclosure agreements do not block sharing.
