Broader Indiana tax breaks for service members

Retroactive to January 1, 2025, Indiana expands which service wages qualify for its military income tax subtraction. Covered wages include 100% of active-duty pay, plus reserve and National Guard pay, including Space Force service. Coverage also includes the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps. Service members or their surviving spouses can claim a separate deduction for up to $5,000 of qualifying service income. That deduction excludes retirement or survivor benefits and income already claimed under the military income subtraction. These changes apply to tax years beginning after December 31, 2024, with a July 1, 2028, sunset.

More service retirees get Indiana tax relief

Retroactive to January 1, 2025, Indiana expands its deduction for qualifying service retirement and survivor benefits. Coverage includes Space Force, U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps service, alongside other covered military service. Service retirees and surviving spouses can deduct the full qualifying benefits included in their adjusted gross income. They cannot deduct the same income again if it already receives the military income subtraction. These changes apply to tax years beginning after December 31, 2024, with a July 1, 2028, sunset.
