Teens can serve as election workers

Beginning July 1, 2026, qualified 16–17 year olds may work elections. You must be a U.S. citizen, live in the county, have about a 3.0 GPA, get school and parent approval, and finish training. Counties may appoint you as a precinct worker (not inspector), assistant, or to help prepare absentee ballots. You may also serve on an absentee board, count ballots, or be a courier if the county board votes unanimously. When you take the oath, you serve under a contract as an independent contractor.

Stronger mine safety certificates and fees

Beginning July 1, 2026, you must hold the right Indiana certificate to work as a mine foreman, examiner, electrician, shot-firer, hoisting engineer, or belt examiner. Most exams require a 75% to pass; mine electrician requires 80%. Experience rules apply, like four years underground for mine foreman (less with certain degrees), three years for mine examiner, and one year plus training for shot-firer and hoisting engineer. Exams are held quarterly; dates are posted at mines and online at least 30 days ahead, and applications are due 10 days before. The exam fee is $25, and a duplicate certificate costs $5; the board may change fees by rule. A Mine Safety Fund uses fees and assessments to buy and maintain underground rescue equipment. Inexperienced miners must wear orange hard hats until certified, and some out-of-state certificates can be recognized temporarily.

Youth labor rules and fines change

Beginning July 1, 2026, employers no longer register with the state just for hiring five or more minors. The state also stops keeping a public list of youth-hiring employers. New fines apply: small hour or posting issues get a warning, then $50, $75, and $100; serious issues like age or hazardous work get a warning, then $100, $200, and $400. No penalty applies for timing violations of 10 minutes or less. The department sets rules to run the program and may suggest rest breaks. A new Labor Education and Youth Employment Fund uses penalty money to hire inspectors, run the data system, and support education. Inspectors may also provide education and outreach.
