Clearer, uniform ballots for Indiana voters

Beginning January 1, 2027, all Indiana ballots follow one statewide layout. Public questions appear first, then party names with the party device shown under the name in a circle at least 3/4 inch wide. If a party has no eligible candidates, the party device is omitted. Standard straight‑party instructions appear to the right of the device, plus clear warnings about independent tickets and that only declared write‑ins count. Party candidate lists sit under the instructions with set spacing and a 3/8‑inch box to the left of each name. Ballots must print all candidates and questions and may include a variation code to ensure the right version by precinct. At‑large candidates are listed before district candidates for councils and school boards, and multi‑seat contests include a warning that you must mark each person because a straight‑party vote does not count for that office.

How straight‑party votes are counted

Beginning January 1, 2027, ballot card and electronic systems let you cast a straight‑party vote in general elections and still pick individuals. You can make one choice for all presidential electors of a party. A straight‑party choice does not count for school board races or certain multi‑member at‑large seats; you must pick each candidate there. If you choose an individual from a different party (or a declared write‑in), that pick overrides the straight‑party choice for that office; overvotes are not counted for that office. Marking straight‑party for more than one party voids party and independent candidate choices, though valid school board votes and public questions still count. Touch‑screen labels cannot offer a straight‑party button when a party has no eligible candidates, and votes for a replaced nominee count for the lawful successor.
