Indiana temporarily bans cultivated meat sales

From July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2027, Indiana bans selling, offering for sale, or making cultivated meat. This means animal protein grown in a facility from extracted animal stem cells, structured to copy conventional meat’s sensory and nutritional qualities. The rules cover individuals, companies, partnerships, trustees, receivers, and other firms or groups. The state board can impose civil penalties up to $10,000 per offense; each continuing day counts separately. Penalties go to the state general fund. After notice and an opportunity for a hearing, the board can seek a court order stopping repeated, ongoing violations.

New cultivated meat labels inform shoppers

Beginning July 1, 2027, cultivated meat packages must say “THIS IS AN IMITATION MEAT PRODUCT.” Ads, labels, offers for sale, and sales must clearly identify cultivated meat or follow state board rules. The law prohibits misbranding, and the board must investigate complaints and adopt rules. These requirements help shoppers identify cultivated meat while adding labeling duties for businesses.
