Foster and emancipated youth gain bank accounts

Beginning July 1, 2025, eligible Indiana youth can open checking or savings accounts in their own names. Foster youth qualify at age 16 or older with recognition from Indiana’s Department of Child Services or its designee. Youth under 18 also qualify if granted emancipation or emancipated by law. Both groups need consent from the juvenile court with authority over them. Youth alone must pay all account costs and any penalties for breaking account terms. They cannot avoid the account contract solely because of their age.
