Hearing aids and speech-language pathologists.

Sponsored By: Lori Goss-Reaves (Republican)

Signed by Governor

Summary

Adds speech-language pathology assistant to the definition of "practitioner" for purposes of the provision of telehealth. Specifies services included in the definition of "audiology". Allows for the sale, use, provision of customer service, or distribution of an over-the-counter hearing aid without the fitting of the hearing aid by a hearing aid dealer who has been issued a certificate of registration or a licensed audiologist. (Current law does not differentiate between a prescription hearing aid and an over-the-counter hearing aid concerning the fitting of the hearing aid.)

Fewer sales rules for over-the-counter hearing aids

Beginning July 1, 2025, Indiana exempts federally defined over-the-counter hearing aids from some dealer and in-person fitting rules. This covers sales, use, customer service, and distribution. People fitting hearing aids still need valid dealer registration or supervision by a registered dealer; that section excludes audiologists. Audiology practice expressly includes selling and fitting prescription and over-the-counter hearing aids, auditory training, and speech reading.

Speech assistants gain state practitioner status

Beginning July 1, 2025, Indiana includes speech-language pathology assistants in a state law's definition of practitioner. Assistants who meet the state's legal definition are covered by rules that use this practitioner definition. This change does not provide a direct household payment or service benefit.
