Trailer equipment rules for fertilizer tank trailers

Beginning July 1, 2026, a farm‑type dry or liquid fertilizer tank trailer or spreader is treated as a trailer when two things are true. It is towed on a highway by a motor vehicle other than a farm tractor, and it is operated faster than 30 mph. In that case, you must meet all trailer equipment rules, like lights, brakes, and reflectors. This applies only when both conditions are met.

Fewer equipment rules for farm and off-road vehicles

Beginning July 1, 2026, the law exempts some vehicles from state equipment rules. The exemptions cover implements of agriculture used mainly in fields or on farm land, road machinery and road rollers, and farm tractors. A vehicle chassis that is part of a manufacturer’s work in process is exempt when driven less than 1 mile, or towed less than 40 miles on a non‑interstate highway. Golf carts and off‑road vehicles are exempt only when a local ordinance allows their road use. Owners who meet these conditions do not have to meet this article’s equipment standards.
