Counties set for crime guns task force

Starting July 1, 2027, the law defines the task force area as Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Marion, Morgan, Johnson, Shelby, Allen, Lake, LaPorte, and Porter counties. This sets where the Indiana crime guns task force operates. Police and sheriff’s offices in these counties can join and assign officers. The definition guides which local agencies take part.

New board to run crime guns task force

Starting July 1, 2027, the law creates an executive board to run the Indiana crime guns task force. The Indianapolis police chief (or designee) is chair, and the state police superintendent (or designee) is vice chair. Sheriffs or police chiefs from departments that assign an officer to the task force serve as members. The board meets at the chair’s call and sets its meeting rules. A majority of active members is a quorum. Each member gets one vote, and actions need a majority of those attending. If a vote ties, the chair’s side wins if at least four members voted for it.

No per diem or travel for board members

Starting July 1, 2027, executive board members do not get the state per diem. They also do not get state travel or other expense reimbursements. This removes those payments while they serve on the board.
