Consent for pelvic, prostate, rectal exams under anesthesia

Beginning July 1, 2026, pelvic, prostate, or rectal exams on sedated or unconscious patients require prior written informed consent. Consent may be given by you, your guardian, or your health care representative. The exam can also proceed without that form only if it is part of the ordered surgery or test you already consented to, there is an immediate medical emergency (including a rape kit), or a court orders it. The consent notice must be separate unless the exam is within the procedure. It must explain the exam’s nature, purpose, and steps; name who will do or supervise it; say if a student will do or watch; let you decline the exam or student involvement; and include a signature line. Your refusal to consent cannot change or cancel your scheduled procedure. Other informed‑consent duties still apply.
