Licensed Kentucky coal mines must employ certified emergency medical technicians or mine emergency technicians when workers extract, produce, or prepare coal. Production shifts with 10 or fewer miners need one technician; shifts with 11–50 miners need two. Underground shifts above 50 miners need one additional technician for each additional 50 miners or part of 50. At least one technician must be underground whenever miners are working. The law removes the separate requirement for a technician on every nonproduction shift.
