Accountants gain broader license renewal relief

Kentucky's Board of Accountancy can reduce or waive license renewal requirements after a written request. The request must show illness, extreme hardship, or age and retirement from practice. Retirement no longer has to be complete. Relief depends on the board's approval under its rules.

Retired accountants can volunteer with limits

Kentucky CPAs with a retirement-based continuing education waiver can volunteer to prepare taxes or join government-sponsored business mentoring programs. They can also serve on nonprofit or government boards, or government-appointed advisory bodies. These services must be unpaid, and the waiver does not allow regulated public accounting practice. When applying for or renewing the waiver, they must confirm they understand its limits. They must also affirm their duty to maintain the skills needed for these services.
