Paid leave and work-hour protections for police

Police department members in covered Kentucky cities and urban-county governments can accrue 15 working days of leave with full pay yearly. Their department's personnel policy sets how leave accrues. Except during emergencies or under KRS 337.285 exceptions, required schedules cannot exceed eight hours daily for five days weekly or ten hours daily for four days weekly. Officers who voluntarily agree to another schedule must receive overtime pay for hours beyond 40 per week. The law also bars salary cuts caused by these rules. These protections do not apply in cities where an ordinance provides that patrolmen are employed or paid by the day. Covered cities must appear on a public registry maintained by the Department for Local Government. The law required registry creation by January 1, 2015, including cities classified as second- or third-class on August 1, 2014. Registry information must be public on the department's website.
