2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Jefferson parish courts can hear larger claims

Jefferson Parish’s First and Second Parish Courts can hear covered civil disputes up to $50,000, up from $20,000. The limit covers the amount disputed or property value, excluding interest, court costs, and lawyer fees. These courts share authority with the district court within their boundaries, and existing legal limits remain in place. A counterclaim, intervention, or third-party opposition necessarily tied to the main claim triggers transfer if its disputed amount or property value exceeds $50,000. The entire case, including all related claims, then moves to the Twenty-Fourth Judicial District Court.

Jefferson courts lose express rental case authority

The law removes a specific grant of authority for Jefferson Parish’s First and Second Parish Courts to hear rental possession suits. That grant covered suits to regain leased property when rent stayed within the limit in Article 4844(A). The law does not say where those suits must now be filed or set any new household charge.
