More burial and expense help for veterans

Louisiana's Military Family Assistance Board can use the fund to pay burial costs for indigent veterans or their spouses. Before death, the person must have received public assistance, lived in public housing, or earned below 200% of federal poverty guidelines. Public assistance includes food stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Medicaid, or disability insurance. Burial payments are at the board's discretion. The fund also can pay necessary expenses for eligible beneficiaries under R.S. 29:288, subject to R.S. 29:289 limits. The law does not state payment amounts or list the other covered expenses.

Veteran nonprofits get grants with spending rules

Louisiana's Military Family Assistance Board can award fund grants for veterans' and families' education, mental health, or housing needs. Eligible nonprofits must have 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status and have existed for at least three years. Each one-time grant is capped at $10,000, with total grants capped at $100,000 per fiscal year. Applicants must submit a specific project proposal and spend grants only under the board-approved proposal and budget. Grants cannot serve as collateral or pay other financial obligations, including interest on credit lines. They also cannot cover cash-flow needs or general operating costs unrelated to the grant's purpose. Recipients must submit a final spending report and keep all related receipts and records for at least four years afterward. Money not used for the grant's purpose must be repaid within 30 days after the final report is submitted. Recipients must allow audits by the board and Louisiana Legislative Auditor.
