Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 3 mixed.

Commission members get new pay rules

Four athletic commission members, excluding the chair, vice chair, and secretary, get $6,000 annually, up from $4,300. Salaries come from the commission's special fund and are reduced proportionately when money falls short. Members may receive up to $150 per day for meetings or commission-approved work, limited to 10 days per month. They may also receive reimbursement for actual, reasonably necessary expenses for commission work. The former separate $80-per-day payment for event travel is removed.

Sports spectators get eight-foot safety buffers

Each commission-regulated event must have a safety zone extending at least eight feet from the ring, cage, or catwalk. The zone must be separated from public seating. Entry requires commission approval, and seating inside requires approval from the commission member attending the event. People entering without approval may be removed.

More wrestling venues qualify, with review fees

The capacity limit for certain professional wrestling event exemptions rises from 400 to 1,000 people. Eligible venues include primary or secondary school gyms, or venues certified by the State Fire Marshal for 1,000 people or fewer. Events must also meet the remaining requirements of the state's professional wrestling exemption law. Qualifying promoters remain exempt from the show-date reservation fee but pay $250 for review of the required written notice.

New license and event fees for promoters

The Louisiana State Athletic Commission can set and adjust license fees. Wrestling and mixed-technique promoters pay $500 instead of $250; boxing promoters pay $250 instead of $500; matchmakers pay $150 instead of $250. Fees rise from $25 to $35 for referees, managers, announcers, seconds, professional wrestling contestants, main-bout professional boxers, and other licensees. When the commission appoints a boxing event coordinator, the promoting club pays the commission-set fee. The former $350-per-event coordinator fee cap is removed.
