New Medicaid path for sickle cell families

Louisiana law adds a way for children with sickle cell anemia to meet Medicaid’s TEFRA level-of-care test. During the previous 12 months, the child must have needed hospital emergency care more than once per month. That care must have been medically necessary to stabilize sickle cell anemia. The law also recognizes disability-related needs for hospital, skilled nursing, or intermediate facility care, even when care outside these settings is appropriate. Meeting this care test does not guarantee coverage; children must still meet other Medicaid eligibility requirements.
