Cigarette tax continues with broader coverage

For taxable periods beginning July 1, 2025, Louisiana continues a 0.2-cent-per-cigarette tax component—4 cents per 20-cigarette pack. Its proceeds remain dedicated to the Health Excellence Fund, and the law does not increase the total state cigarette tax. The cigarette definition covers tobacco rolls made for smoking or heating, excluding rolls with wrappers made wholly or mostly of tobacco. Smoking tobacco includes tobacco suitable for smoking in a pipe or cigarette. Vapor products are excluded from the cigarette tax.
