Required proton therapy coverage for cancer patients

Louisiana health insurers must cover proton therapy and proton beam therapy for cancer when American Society for Radiation Oncology guidelines recommend it. This requirement applies to new policies, contracts, programs, and health plans issued on or after January 1, 2026. Existing plans must comply at renewal, no later than January 1, 2027. Annual deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments may still apply, consistent with the plan's existing rules. Plans covering excepted benefits, limited health benefit insurance plans, and short-term policies lasting less than 12 months are excluded.
