Longer certification for Medicaid social workers

Louisiana expands who can provide Medicaid Community Psychiatric Support and Treatment (CPST) services through licensed, accredited agencies. Certified social workers can extend their initial three-year certificate for up to three more years, limited to CPST work. They must have provided CPST services and meet all master's-level social worker license requirements except R.S. 37:2707(A)(3). They must apply at least 60 days before their certificate expires. Applications must state the requested extension period and how much CPST service they provided to a licensed, accredited provider. They must include a signed statement from their licensed clinical supervisor supporting the request and confirming continued supervision. The board can request more information and must approve applications meeting these requirements. Required continuing education and annual renewal fees still apply. Other eligible CPST staff include fully licensed mental health professionals, provisional counselors and marriage and family therapists, and licensed master social workers. Certified social workers, qualifying psychology interns, and workers with the limited-scope extension also qualify. Only fully licensed mental health professionals can assess clients or plan treatment. Providers must ensure staff meet credential requirements to receive Medicaid payment. The law took effect upon the governor's signature.
