Louisiana bans kratom possession and sales

Beginning August 1, 2025, Louisiana bans knowingly making, distributing, dispensing, or possessing kratom with intent to do those acts. Knowing or intentional possession is also illegal. Kratom includes substances derived from Mitragyna speciosa leaves or containing 7-hydroxymitragynine or mitragynine. Making or distributing less than 500 grams carries up to $50,000 in fines, 1–3 years in prison, or both. For 500 grams or more, penalties are up to $50,000, 1–5 years in prison, or both. Possessing 20 grams or less carries a fine of up to $100. Above 20 grams, a first conviction carries up to $500, up to six months in parish jail, or both. Later convictions above 20 grams carry up to $1,000, up to six months in parish jail, or both. The law also adds Mitragyna speciosa to the prohibited-plant list and the two chemicals to Schedule I. The Schedule I listing excludes FDA-approved pharmaceutical products, substances listed in another schedule, and specifically exempted substances.
