Easier Medicaid care during declared emergencies

Beginning August 1, 2025, Louisiana's health department can pause Medicaid approval rules during a governor-declared emergency. These pauses cover advance approvals and reviews during treatment, and apply only to recipients living in the designated emergency area. Medicaid managed care plans, pharmacy benefit managers, and fee-for-service claims processors must pay providers without advance approval for medically necessary drugs, services, equipment, supplies, and therapies provided during the emergency. They must also pay out-of-state providers for essential care when Louisiana Medicaid recipients evacuate out of state, by choice or not. Managed care plans must explain approval pauses, continued access to care, and members' rights through healthcare providers, community outreach, and online platforms, including efforts to reach vulnerable or displaced members.
