The law takes effect January 1, 2026, and requires covered Maryland health plans to cover calcium score testing. It applies to policies, contracts, and health benefit plans issued, delivered, or renewed in Maryland on or after that date. Coverage follows the latest American College of Cardiology guidelines that expand preventive care. The law removes the previous rule limiting coverage to people with three listed risk factors. Insurers, nonprofit health service plans, HMOs, and managed care organizations must follow this requirement.
Beginning January 1, 2026, Maryland Medical Assistance covers calcium score testing for its enrollees. Coverage follows the latest American College of Cardiology guidelines that expand preventive care. The program also covers prostheses beginning January 1, 2025, and biomarker testing beginning July 1, 2025. These coverage requirements depend on the state budget and must follow federal law.
