State group to review public records and fees

The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife convenes a working group with the Right to Know Advisory Committee. The group reviews which records from the named agencies are public and which can be confidential under the Freedom of Access Act. It reviews fees for large records requests and suggests a fair cost structure. It also identifies other records management and retention issues as needed. By January 14, 2026, the group submits a report with findings and suggested laws to the Judiciary, Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Marine Resources, and Criminal Justice and Public Safety committees. Each committee may file a related bill for the Second Regular Session of the 132nd Legislature. The Department provides staff and support to run the group.

Who serves on the public records group

The group includes one member from the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, appointed by the Commissioner, who serves as chair. It includes two non-legislator members from the Right to Know Advisory Committee; one represents law enforcement. One member comes from the Secretary of State's office, one from Marine Resources, and one from Public Safety. The chair may add members if a majority of the group agrees, and the group consults with a representative from the Attorney General's office. Within 30 days after this law takes effect, the Right to Know Advisory Committee and the named agencies must tell the Department who they selected.
