Mobile and delivery syringe exchange options

Beginning June 22, 2025, certified syringe exchange programs can run mobile sites inside the municipality where they are certified. They can rotate locations, change schedules, or set up short-term sites if they safely collect and dispose of used syringes. The Maine CDC must preapprove operating parameters like zones, hours, or site types. Programs can also deliver syringes within their service area, but only to places that invite them. Deliveries must protect client privacy and ensure safe handling and disposal.

No extra funding for program expansion

Beginning June 22, 2025, expanding sites or adding delivery does not increase a program’s pay under its current Maine CDC contract. Programs can grow services, but their existing contract funding does not go up automatically.
