Faster update to naturopath drug list
The Board’s formulary subcommittee must update the naturopathic drug list, and the Board must adopt it by rule. Before a final recommendation, the subcommittee must consult pharmacist members of the Board of Pharmacy. The update and rule adoption must be finished by January 1, 2026. The rules are major substantive. The law took effect on May 30, 2025.
New limits on naturopath prescriptions
Beginning May 30, 2025, licensed naturopathic doctors in Maine can prescribe only certain noncontrolled prescription drugs. They may prescribe homeopathic remedies; vitamins and minerals; hormones; local anesthesia; and immunizations named by rule. A subcommittee with naturopaths, a pharmacist, and a physician sets the list by rule. Naturopathic doctors cannot prescribe psychotropic medicines.
