2027 sales bans on some appliances
Beginning January 1, 2027, Maine bans selling certain new appliances if the Department’s rules list them. The ban only covers units made on or after January 1, 2027. Covered types include commercial battery chargers, commercial dishwashers, food steamers, fryers, ovens, computer server power supplies, and residential ventilating fans. The Department can adopt major rules and may use other states’ test data to check compliance. Violations are civil and carry a fine up to $100 per separate sale.
Exemptions for older and used appliances
Used units in the listed categories remain legal to sell. Items on the 2027 list stay legal to sell if they were made before January 1, 2027. Items on the earlier list stay legal to sell if they were made before January 1, 2023. If federal law preempts state rules for a product, Maine’s ban does not apply while that federal rule is in force.
