Members unpaid; Motor Vehicles staffs group
Working group members are not paid. The Bureau of Motor Vehicles gives staff help using current resources. No new state money is provided for this support.
Study on mini trucks and similar vehicles
The law creates a 7-member group to study vehicles now banned on Maine roads. This includes mini trucks, antique military vehicles, and other vehicles under 10,000 pounds driven with a Class C license. Members are the deputy secretary of state for the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (or a designee), a State Police traffic-safety expert, and reps from insurance, inspection businesses, foreign car importers, municipalities, and a transportation museum. Most members are appointed by the Secretary of State. The group must list current bans, review crash safety, emissions, and speed, compare to allowed vehicles like antiques and motorcycles, and study other states’ laws and reports. It must consider ways to allow use with limits on place, miles, or speed, how to register and inspect them, and whether to change Maine law. The Secretary of State sends the report to the Transportation Committee by February 6, 2026. This law does not change registration or driving rules now.
