Clearer rules for student escort and injuries
The law defines “physical escort” in schools as temporary, voluntary touching or holding of the hand, wrist, arm, shoulder, or back to guide a student to a safe place. It also defines “serious physical injury” as any harm, whether self‑inflicted or caused by someone else, that needs a medical practitioner, including a school nurse, to check or treat the person. These definitions govern restraint and seclusion rules in Maine schools. The “serious physical injury” definition ends on August 1, 2029.
