The Office of Behavioral Health must convene a working group to plan wider access to adult drug, family, and veterans treatment courts across Maine. The goal is for defendants in every prosecutorial district and every county to have a nearby docket. The group includes the Judicial Department; prosecutors and defense representatives; probation and parole officers; local law enforcement; veterans and child welfare officials; pretrial supervision groups; and a statewide reentry group. Adult drug and family treatment courts serve adults whose criminal cases stem in part from a serious substance use disorder and can dismiss most or all charges after a successful program. The Office must report recommendations and any suggested legislation to the Judiciary Committee by January 1, 2026.
