PFAS limits for Maine public water

Maine sets maximum PFAS levels for community and nontransient, noncommunity water systems. The limits match the federal list from April 26, 2024 and do not include later updates. The law also defines which PFAS are covered by pointing to that list. Starting June 25, 2025, these limits apply to your public water provider.

State can set stricter PFAS rules

The department can make rules to lower PFAS limits or add more PFAS chemicals to regulate. It can also issue routine technical rules to run testing, reporting, and enforcement. This protects health, including prenatal health. This authority starts June 25, 2025.

Treat PFAS exceedances and notify public

If a system exceeds a PFAS limit, it must treat the water or use another remedy and give public notice. Notices must list each PFAS found, each level, and the total PFAS level. The department can enforce these rules, and any person can appeal department decisions. Systems must also tell the department and police right away if tampering is suspected. These protections start June 25, 2025.

Water systems must test and report PFAS

All community and nontransient, noncommunity water systems must monitor for PFAS under federal rules from April 26, 2024. They must also send PFAS sample results using the federal reporting rules, unless the state sets stricter ones. These duties start June 25, 2025.
