Grants to strengthen community schools

The law creates a nonlapsing Community Schools Success Fund in the Maine Department of Education. The department gives grants to community schools, local education providers, and nonprofits. Local education providers include school administrative units, schools in unorganized territories, public charter schools, and certain Part 4, Subpart 2 programs. Applicants must be a designated community school, an SAU building a community school plan, an LEP in an SAU with a community school, or a nonprofit that supports these programs. They must file a grant plan that describes the work to be funded and their existing programs. Grants can pay for needs and resource audits, readiness plans, sustainability work, training, and peer mentoring. The Commissioner sets routine rules for who can get grants and how money can be spent, including hiring, contracts, technical help, and statewide trainings and conferences.

Small start-up funding for school grants

The law provides a base allocation of $500 in 2025–26 and $500 in 2026–27 for the Community Schools Success Fund. This authorizes the department to spend funds it receives on grants to schools and nonprofits in those years.
