Permits can't reduce safety at airports

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection cannot add permit terms that make the air operations area at a public-use airport less safe. This applies to permits under the Natural Resources Protection Act and the Site Location of Development law. The air operations area means runways, taxiways, aircraft parking, loading ramps, and nearby secure zones. For airports without a Transportation Security Administration (TSA)–approved security program, the department uses a substantially similar area. Beginning June 17, 2025, the state bars any permit condition the department finds would reduce on-airport safety.
